On the 6th of May we at DBL celebrated the feast of St. Dominic Savio; Rabindra Jayanti; held our annual prize distribution ceremony and bid farewell to our beloved Father Biji.
The day started with the lighting of the lamp by father Biji, followed by a solemn prayer service organized by the YCS to celebrate the feast of St.Dominic Savio. Passages were read from the Bible, hymns were sung and a brief history of the short life of the young saint was read out.
A celebration of the 148th birthday of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore followed .Dances on Rabindrasangeet like 'Mor bina uthe kon sure baje' were performed and songs like 'Pran chai chokhukhu na chai' were sung. An instrumental performance of Tagore's compositions mellowed everyone's heart. But the pick of the lot was a mime rendition of 'Birpurush' which drew a huge applause from the audience. A presentation on Kabiguru's life and a dance to the tune of 'guru guru guru guru ghano megho garje' brought the celebrations to an end.
The prize distribution ceremony followed, in which the academic achievers of the previous session came up on stage to receive books and certificates from our chief guest of the day Father Biji. The ceremony went on for almost two hours.
And then it was the moment that everyone from teachers to students to office and non-teaching staff had not been looking forward to: the farewell of our very own Father Biji. The school choir took the stage and sang 'Purano sei diner kotha', both in Bengali and English, moistening everyone’s hearts and eyes. It was followed by 'Showers of blessings.' Father Pathickal and Surath Bhattacharjee spoke on Father Biji, Surath on behalf of the students. A presentation reflecting Father Biji's three and half year stay in the school saw emotions running high as the full house broke into thunderous applause every now and then. Father Biji then came on stage to thank all of us for what we had done for him all these years. He said that he had no other option but to remember us and that DBL will always be a part of him. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Father Pathickal. We truly shall miss you Father Biji.
