Andrew Yule Elocution Contest
“The Youth of a Nation are the trustees of posterity. “
This famous quote by British author and politician Benjamin Disraeli is universally agreed upon. Today’s youngsters are the leaders of tomorrow. With this thought in mind, Andrew Yule and Company Ltd. organizes an annual elocution contest called the Andrew Yule Elocution Contest. This competition provides a platform for the budding speakers of Kolkata to voice their opinions on various subjects.
This year, the topic for the elocution contest was-“Global Warming- A Threat to Ecological Balance.” Global warming is an issue that is very much in the air, as its repercussions are being noticed by the common man. This contest gave us a chance to join this fight against Global Warming.
The contest was open to students of classes 6-10. There were three categories, namely, Bengali, Hindi and English. Preliminary rounds were organized on the 14th, 15th and 16th of January for each of these categories respectively. These rounds saw students from many schools of Kolkata and nearby areas voicing their opinion on this environmental issue.
Two of the students from D.B.L, Saurav Mundhra and Gaganjyot Singh, both from class 9 qualified for the finals of the contest in the Hindi and English categories respectively. The finals were held on the 21st of January. There were six speakers in each category. Eminent personalities from the fields of Environmental Science, English and Hindi languages were invited to judge the event.
All the finalists including the two from DBL were given certificates, mementoes and gift vouchers. All in all, it was a great experience and we went home satisfied because we had played a role in making people aware of the havoc that can be caused if we do not fight global warming.
